Danville’s River District: A Downtown Reborn

The River District in Danville, VA is one of the most compelling downtown revitalization stories in the American South. Centered around Main Street and Craghead Street, this neighborhood was once the beating heart of Virginia’s tobacco empire. Brick warehouses built between 1870 and 1910 stored and processed bright-leaf tobacco that made Danville famous. When those industries declined, the warehouses sat empty. Today, they have been brought back to life through more than $375 million in private investment, transforming the River District into a walkable destination filled with restaurants, breweries, boutique hotels, a science center, and entertainment venues including River District Social.

The revitalization that began in 2008 has produced remarkable results: over 1,283 apartments completed or in development, 97 new small businesses, and 623 jobs created and retained. Danville celebrated 25 years as a Virginia Main Street community in 2024, and the momentum shows no sign of slowing down.

Where to Eat and Drink

The River District dining scene spans casual to upscale, all set within buildings that carry more than a century of history. These are the spots you need to know.

Ballad Brewing operates out of a renovated 1891 tobacco warehouse at 600 Craghead Street. Their 20-barrel brewing setup produces a rotating lineup of craft beers served in a family-friendly taproom. Dogs are welcome, food trucks rotate on the patio, and weekly bingo nights draw a loyal crowd. The brewery’s name pays homage to the Ballad of Old 97, referencing Danville’s famous 1903 train wreck.

Golden Leaf Bistro at 215 Craghead Street delivers gourmet dining inside another historic tobacco warehouse. Expect steaks, seafood, handcrafted pastas, and a full wine cellar. Live music plays Thursday through Saturday, and the large outdoor patio seats 60. This is the River District’s go-to for a special dinner out.

River District Social at 680 Lynn Street occupies a section of a 120-year-old tobacco warehouse and combines a full bar and grill with entertainment. Our menu features chef-crafted burgers, mango habanero wings, flatbreads, and cocktails, all served alongside golf simulators, bowling lanes, and pool tables. It is the only venue in Danville where you can eat, drink, and play under one roof.

Cotton offers riverfront dining with patio seating overlooking the Dan River. Flatbreads, premium seafood, and spirits make it a popular choice for a scenic meal downtown.

The Tobacco Warehouse District

The physical character of the River District is defined by its tobacco heritage. The National Historic District encompasses approximately 40 blocks and includes 532 contributing buildings, most of them late-19th and early-20th century brick warehouses and factories. Walking the streets, you see the original brickwork, arched windows, and industrial scale of buildings that once processed Virginia’s most valuable crop. The fact that these structures now house breweries, restaurants, hotels, and entertainment venues gives the River District an authenticity that purpose-built entertainment districts cannot replicate.
